Sir Tom

A couple of weeks back we lost our oldest rabbit, Tom. He was 11 and he died peacefully at home with his rabbit friend, which is probably how he'd have wanted to go if you had asked him.

Losing someone who I have lived with for so long always gets me wanting to do something and this time it was to name a big tank after him, the Sir Tom.

The tank is a Rogal Dorn battle tank, a vehicle I have been meaning to add to my Hervictus tank regiment since it was released. Weirdly, I was supposed to have one from eBay delivered on the day Tom actually died, with Royal Mail somehow losing it somewhere on my street, so it felt right that the two should go together.

Tendorians Pt3

Focus Project ; No

Carrying on with trying to make a project, that I wouldn't have bought right now if it wasn't so cheap, something other than backlog fodder with the last two squads in my completely arbitrary minimum painting list* - the last infantry squad and the last heavy weapon squad of 1st platoon.

*I feel like that needed a comma somewhere but there wasn't really anywhere for one

I bought 99 figures for this project for much cheaper than retail in the Combat Patrol magazine, 6x10 infantry squads, 4x 6 heavy weapon squads and 3x 5 for command squads. These last units get me half way done if you ignore the extra command**.

**which is penciled to be a company command

The 3rd infantry squad is pretty much the same as the other two, with the only differences being a flamer as the second special weapon and the sgt has been kit bashed with the command squad spare bits - to avoid having 3 identical models in every platoon. . .

I spent ages trying to decide what to build the second heavy weapon squad as, and I don't necessarily think I came to the right choice, but I went with lascannons, as I played a game with my Hervictus (Steel Legion models) and the lascannons were useless but fun.

The Void Claws

Focus Project ; No
This may have been a mistake.

A few weeks back I was having a chat with a mate about an idea that was half forming in my head - I was reading a fantasy novel and the enemy race were a tribe like people who each bond with their tribe's totem animal, with families made up of the adult and their animal/s, rather than mixed human groups* and I wanted a 40k version.
*kids counting towards the mother's animal number rather than as people
As I had a run in the morning and was then doing a fair bit of driving with the kids straight after, I had the time to give this thought the chance to grow into something. The obvious answer was Kroot, they now have a combat patrol and they could fit well into the current campaign as mercenaries allied to the Chaos forces, and lay the ground work for a Tau campaign in the future, but if I am being honest, the idea of painting them scares me.
The other option was the Space Wolves - although, more in a fuller 1k project than the combat patrol as the patrol didn't have the wolf element I was after. But how to make them 'mine'?

The thought then grew to how would I make them different to the other chapter's that live in my head and the answer was obvious, bastardise the back story of the Carcharadons. This chapter was created in the Indomintus founding by Guilliman as one of a few chapters seeded with the thought of a future where the Imperium could look to expand again. The chapter was sent straight off into the outer dark, beyond the fringes of Imperial space to harass and weaken threats outside the border, so that when an Imperial push came along, they would have an easier time conquering new planets.
As part of how they work, they make heavy use of Wolf Scouts. The scout's job is to attack the planet ahead of the main force, hack all communication networks, then when the invasion begins, all the defenders hear on any frequency is incessant howling that breaks resolve.

More recently, the chapter has been assigned as one of the three Wardens of the Ivonian Cluster chapters**, tasked with capturing the area of space and then holding it for the Imperium, with a single planet being taken as a base of operations and "home planet" for each chapter.
**more in the future

When it came to putting this theory into practise, I managed to talk myself into keeping it cheap and self contained***, with a single Kill Team - the Wolf Scouts. This way, if I don't buy anything else, the project can already be used, and if I do buy more, I have a squad I can add to the army.
As the scouts aren't a usual pack, they are individuals with the right talents taken from full packs, I have left their old pack markings on their shoulder pad as I feel that will always be more important to them than their new squad - but their rank is on their knee pad. This squad has members of the Spirit Wolves, Hawk Eyes and Savage Fang packs.
***for the moment?

Tendorians Pt2

Focus Project ; No

While they shouldn't really be a priority, I am aiming to get at least a 'full' platoon of my Tendorians table ready just to make sure I haven't bought 100 figures that go straight into backlog. From the figures I have bought, I am counting this 'full' platoon as; a command squad, 3 infantry squads and a pair of heavy weapon squads.

This post is another decent chunk of those figures - mostly held up by how long it takes to build them.

The command squad - I didn't give the squad a banner as it just doesn't feel right for a platoon command to have one - that's something I will leave for the company command despite me losing a fair few useful rules by it. The office has the female head with the pony tail as it is just a really nice piece.

The first heavy weapon squad - I went with the autocannons as they felt the most rounded choice. I am really unsure what to build the next squad with if I am being honest.

The second squad. I've built all 3 units with slightly different special weapons choices - all 3 have plasmas, as they are just the best option, but this squad I gave a grenade launcher instead of the melta for a bit of variety.

The 3rd squad is well on it's way to being done, and that just leaves me to build the 2nd heavy weapon unit and then look at the 2nd platoon.

Rounding out an old army

Focus Project ; No

An army that has been really hard done by me over the past few years, although, for a fair reason* is my Imperial Knights army - House Steinschild. I was slowly building to a point where I could field a full knight army for 30k (with prior warning to an opponent as I'm just not that sort of guy) when the rules for the army changed and there was a requirement of Armigers as troops came in, so I dropped that idea hard.

On paper, it is a change I am pretty happy about, but as someone who didn't own any Armigers at that point and realising how many boxes I needed to buy to make the army legal, it was just beyond me.

*price

My knights have seen the table a fair bit despite that, as Lords of War allies in 30k and as normal allies in bigger 40k games. We even played a game last year where each player took a single knight and we respawned any dead ones to keep it interesting, but this isn't a knight army. However, last year a pair of knight combat patrols were released in White Dwarf, both of which just needed a single box of Armigers. When my brother bought himself a Chaos Wardog box**, I found myself with an opponent, which meant it was only a a matter of time before I got the opposites.

**Chaos Armigers

I decided my pair should be the squires of the knight that gets the most use - Sir Fion my Knight Errant - and I gave her a bit of a glow up at the same time as I felt like my older knights were a touch basic in their schemes.

I spent far longer staring at the first one of the pair that I painted trying to work out how I would fill the blank spaces. I wanted to get the house badge on them but they don't have the shields, so I tried the symbol on their carapace instead and liked it so much that I went back to the bigger knight and did the same.  The skulls on the front of their personal pad show their rank as squires (less skulls shows a higher rank and closer to knighthood themself) and they have their knight's heraldry on the back of their pad to honour them. Otherwise the allegiance pad is the same as the big knights, Imperial Eagle on the front and Sons of Horus green and markings on the back half***.

I also changed how the bigger knight's personal heraldry pad looks with the dragon motif being moved to the front as I didn't like how she sort of had two different heraldries that didn't make sense.

***the army was always themed to be early in the heresy

Tendoria

Focus Project ; No

Looking at the dates online, 23 years ago, Games Workshop released a plastic kit of Cadian shock troops at a show in London held at Alexander Palace that my mate and me went to*. There was quite a lot on our shopping lists but we had next to no money and this kit was what we both ended up buying instead. Thus my first Imperial Guard army was born.

*I can't remember what it was called (Conflict maybe?) but it was like a mini games day

This army was painted in a winter scheme as we were working on winter scenery at the time, then they were repainted in black to be faux Gaunt's Ghost, before finally settling on a blue uniform and grey armour as the Tendorian 20th. The issue I had was this was both the era where I then went nuts and expanded the army in a big way and also when GW had a bad batch of plastic glue that failed over time, so one game I found half my army started falling apart as it came out of the foam and I very much lost interest in an army that couldn't be trusted to survive simple transportation**. Hence why my next Guard army was a metal army using the Steel Legion figures.
The next issue was what this army's thing was - initially they were a regiment raised by a planet who thought it was effectively a hack to equip their cheapest commodity (people) with the cheapest equipment that could be bought and send them off into the stars instead of losing valuable goods to the tithe as most planets do***, but this is what my Hervictus guard became instead.
**one figure had the arms, legs, base and head all fall off as I picked it up
***because grim dark
   So the new fluff;
Tendoria Prime is an Agri World in the neighbouring system to Hervictus itself. The planet's main export is edible produce but it has a martial history that it is keen to reinforce. There is a founding myth taught in every scholam on Tendoria that millennia ago the planet was colonised by demobbed Cadians and they are proud to have multiple regimental standards on Terra itself.
Tendoria supplies the Imperium with highly trained, highly motivated shock troops trained in the Cadian style.

When it came to painting this batch, I decided not to do the blue and grey uniform again - partly as the blue and grey has been subsumed into my other imperial armies, Hervictus got the grey armour and a really light blue trouser, while my Mechanicus have the bright blue. I also didn't want to paint a colour scheme I have elsewhere, so the traditional khaki uniform with green armour was a no go as my Tempestus Scions stole that too. So, I went for a light green uniform and brown armour to suggest a camouflage idea without committing to it.

The Bullgryns

Focus Project; No

I am very much still struggling with painting time - work is mental at the moment and a fair bit of my hobby time is fitted between jobs as a screen break - while the rest of my "not parenting time" is spent either running or at Wayland Games. At no point will you see me complain that I am now gaming again, but it has meant my backlog of painting isn't getting much better*.

*read as much much worse

On that note, I have a game lined up for later this week where I plan to use my Imperial Guard. My opponent is going to be deep striking Terminators behind my line, so I wanted a unit to be able to deal with them, even if deal with just means a substantial speed bump. The idea I came up with was 6 Bullogryns - abhuman mutants that the Imperium uses for their sheer bulk.

I already had 3 from a past project that I repainted the trousers a few years back to match my Hervictus infantry but now I wanted a full 6 and to tidy them up properly.

The Imperium is currently losing our campaign, so lets see if I can help or hinder their cause with my Guard.

584th Liumia Pegasii Taurox Prime

I'm very much trying to be good with my hobby spend and not doing brilliantly - especially considering how few games I have been playing this year - and the one project that I've ummed and urghed about the most is my Tempestus Scions.

   Ultimately, as they have a finish point that is reasonable, it makes sense to get this project done and with that in mind I had two last units to pick up;

1. The second infantry squad

2. The Turox

As the thumb nail probably gave away, I bought the vehicle instead of the squad. The thinking was, that, while I normally try to get as much of my regular infantry painted while I still have the motivation, in this case, the project was likely to come unstuck when it came to buy the transport, so I cut that issue out and just bought it.

Posing with the command squad

Cards on the table. This is a model I have never liked and had no plans of ever buying, but as one is needed for the Combat Patrol, I sucked it up and just got one.
Now, that I've built and painted my first, I absolutely love it and want more. I kept the colours similar to the infantry - although I used a different beige to make sure it didn't match the cloth of the uniform exactly.

The regimental badge is from an old Bretonnian decal sheet and fits almost exactly. While the number at the back is my time from my first Park Run at the end of September.

I am almost definitely planning on buying more of these as time goes on, as I just really enjoyed the finished project. Maybe this army will become a thing.

Growing the Knights

After painting the Eradicators and saying that scratched the itch quite nicely, I then bought some more marines fairly soon afterwards. In defence of myself*, a local player was having a fire sale of unbuilt kits after a domestic conversation and as I'd had some Blade Guard Veterans on the list of models that I really wanted but just could not justify the price tag of, and seeing some cheap it seemed stupid not to just pick them up**.

I have also been thinking about my current level of gaming., One big thing was that I wasn't doing much collecting/painting for the Imperial side of the campaign as we were fairly well represented on that side, but due to the lack of games and a lack of gaming venue, this has slightly shifted the other way, so I wanted to have a second look at my Aurora Knights and fill any gaps.

*Someone needs to defend me

**I was persuaded during the visit to pick up some unplanned bits but hey

This post is a few units that I picked up or have dug out of my own backlog and got ready for the table and to fill those gaps.

The first unit are the Blade Guard Veterans that set this little debacle off. These have been painted as fairly standard 1st company vets for my Aurora Knights as seen in my Sternguard from the Leviathan boxset. When it came to the shields, I gave one a Ukrainian flag (as the guy selling the models has links to the war), a Norfolk flag (as I decided to buy these while in the county) and the last guy has a bit of a placer shield while I try to think of something else to do.

Next up is an Invader ATV, which has been in my backlog for far longer than I am happy with. It came from a partworks magazine - not sure if it was Conquest or Imperium - but it was something I wasn't ever going to buy full price, but a tenner made it worth picking up. It was another model that I had painters block on trying to decide what should be gold and what should be mechanical. Now I have this, it probably needs a squad of Outriders to go with it.

Next up is Captain Hippolytus of the 4th Company. I was chatting to a mate and he was working out a campaign for these space marines to play in next year***, at which point I noticed I didn't have much in the way of regular leadership for the Aurora Knights 4th Company - the glaring missing entry was the captain himself****.
I decided as a rule of thumb, that I can break at my own leisure, battle company captains would wear Gravis armour (sort of baby Terminator armour) and reserve company captains could wear regular MKx armour - just so I can use what ever models I like but feel like there is a system. Hippolytus is therefore wearing the best in non-terminator armour the chapter can supply, with a cloak in his company colour and an ancient chainsword, once welded on Terra by a hero of the heresy*****.
***which I am pretty sure won't happen
****I do have a captain model for this chapter, but as he is in terminator armour, I want to keep him as the 1st company captain.
*****any rumours that a shrine world is missing it's star relic are unsubstantiated by the chapter

Next is the Apothecary Biologis, from the Leviathan boxset. This model was so close to being finished before he must have gotten caught up in a tidy up session and packed away. I finished the last few bits and added the decals. He isn't perfect, but he is done.

Lastly for this post is a model I painted a few months back on a whim, wrote a post for then didn't ever take a photo of, so he's been lumped to the bottom of this one. When we finished the Fratribusia campaign, I found some decals I wanted to use for any Imperial forces who had taken part (the crab claw with the skull on the banner) and the more I thought about it, the more a banner for the company that I got add campaign markings to as I went, made sense.

And yes, I do have more in the backlog for this project . . .

584th Liumia Pegasii Command

This isn't going to be the most ground breaking post but the 584th Liumia Pegasii Tempestus Scions are a project I started with fanfare and then lost momentum on, so I need to fix that. With no games having been played for nearly 2 months now there had been no real motivation to force myself to paint anything that I wasn't enjoying and these guys are a touch too fiddly to be fun.
I had a rule that I was going to buy a box of these guys at a time rather than whole squads, just to make sure I had a conveyor belt of models without going hard into something that might have just been dropped, but the last time I bought a box, I got overly excited and picked up two instead. Then inevitably, didn't paint them up straight after the first.

However, now with these done and knowing I'm two units away from the combat patrol and over half way in terms of figures, I'm wondering if it is worth picking up the last few models and just getting it done, but I also have other projects to do?

Eradication Games

Another unit that is hard to explain. I had a few weeks where I was toying with another big space marine project of, at minimum, Combat Patrol size, which was frankly ridiculous when I already have so many projects on the go. So, to scratch the itch with minimal outlay, effort and disruption, I picked up a box of Eradicator Marines which I do actually have in a list I have hopes of using in late October.
It has to be said, some projects you struggle with until you are nearly finished and others are just a delight from start to finish. This unit was the latter. I need to give my Aurora Knights a bit more love as I have a fair few of them but nothing that looks like a really usable list - something to think about.

It's only at the point of going to post this that I noticed I haven't painted their left knee pad black like the rest of my marines but that can be fixed.

Sanctifiers

How do I explain this post? Really it should be the second or 3rd post in a series but it's the first, so lets give this a go. Warhammer released scenery kit a few years back of an angelic statue about 2 stories high that I always meant to buy but couldn't quite justify the price of, they then discountinued it and the second hand price went mental. A few years later, Warhammer released a Kill Team box called Blood and Zeal, which had the statue in again but I also couldn't justify buying two Kill Teams to get some scenery, so I passed on.

I have spent the start of summer painting a World Eaters Chaos army and one of the units it can take are Goremoungers, effectively slightly improved cultists who rather helpfully come in the Blood and Zeal box. As the box is out of print now the 3 parts of it have gone on sale separately and are all about half the price of the box. It was about this point I realised that I wanted 2 parts, I had a vague use for the 3rd.

Luckily there is a shop around the corner from me that is actually a vape shop, but who set a board up in their shop to play 40k during the day and kept having customers ask if they sold Warhammer, so they decided to do just that. Because they don't have a website, strange boxes of things that sell out on release day sit unsold on their shelves, so it's a grab place to pick up the odd things that you missed first time around - this was one of those.

This is very much becoming one of those units that was bought without a plan as the 'almost free' bit of a set I wanted and has quickly become my favourite bit. I now need to make sure I don't build an army around it, but I have so many projects fighting to be the first I do next, that's not too big a challenge.

584th Liumia Pegasii

As the guy who is playing all sides in the current 40k campaign, I keep thinking about what isn't represented that probably should be*, the Imperial Battle Group is likely to include a few Space Marine chapters, at least one Sisters of Battle order, then nowhere near enough Guard.
With this in mind, I sat and thought about what would make sense to represent another regiment but to keep the project small without it being daft that I only painted a single platoon. It was obvious that the answer is basically Kasrkin or Tempestus Scions and as I have a unit of the former to paint for my traitors, the latter made the most sense.

*the chaos side is easier, as they are just warbands pulled together, there are no rules, although, I probably need a bit more variety in traitor guard/cultists

As an elite unit, who are trained and recruited from the same pool of orphans as Commissars and Sisters Of Battle (if I remember my fluff right), I decided I wanted these guys to reflect something from real world elite forces and use a colour scheme that might help them rather than hinder**. With this in mind, I chose a dark green armour and a beige uniform underneath.
**although it is still 40k, so of course they have a metallic trim to their armour

This was supposed to just be a test box to see if the idea worked and to stop myself going mad and then not doing anything with the project but I ended up buying a second box once I finished it and now I have a full squad. At this point I now have a squad I can add to my guard armies but can also use for Kill Team, then look at adding another squad, a command squad and then either a Taurox (to make the combat patrol) or a squad of Aquilons for rule of cool and a 500 point army (plus they are a Kill Team themselves)

Imperial Navy Bomber Wing 1538

Unlike my Fighter Wing from this post*, I've gone with a much more two tone, camouflaged scheme instead of a bold one colour, matching what real bombers would have. I've figured that in the novels fighters are smaller and tend to be showier, relying on speed in the air and being moved under cover on the ground to keep the aircraft safe. Bombers on the other hand are slower in the air, and more likely to be less under cover on the ground, so need a bit more protection, plus as they are from different Wings, they don't need to match**.
*which still needs expanding by a couple of planes really
**I plan to add a 3rd different Wing in the future too

It's quite odd that I really like the beige scheme my fighter wing is currently in and I also have a model of a plane from it in 28mm sitting on a shelf behind me, but looking at these bombers, they really do just feel 'right'.

Land Raider Redeemer

Over Christmas, when I was thinking a lot of Grey Knight vs Daemon thoughts I was toying with small lists and the one thing I kept adding to lists was a Land Raider. It was only when I finally caved and ordered myself one that I decided on the Redeemer variant with the extra flame throwing goodness, mostly as I've painted a few of the basic one in one form or another.
Like the two units I've just posted about, this model was built, sprayed and had the base metals done fairly early but then sat on the side of my desk for months while I worked on other things.

I suspect this model was the real reason the last batches of Grey Knights didn't move past the basic metals, I just wasn't sure what to do with it. I've used a few blocks of white and red in the normal Grey Knight heraldry patterns to break the shiny metal up but I still think this tank is missing something - possibly it's just too clean?

It was only when I came to photograph the model that I also noticed I hadn't stuck any purity seals on, which might have broken up the solid block of colour a bit more?

Grey Knight Characters

This post is about the two terminator HQ choices I have for my Grey Knights. The librarian came in the combat patrol and was painted up at the same time as the rest of the project, I just didn't post about him for some reason, while the brother captain/grand master (depending on what I need them to be) was Christmas present that sat half finished for too long on the side of my desk.

The commander is a Kaldor Draigo figure that I had been toying with picking up to use as the base for a brother captain/grand master as there isn't really much of a choice in that department for the Grey Knights but I was beaten to the punch and gifted one instead. This figure had enough details and bits on them that I thought I could make them stand out, however, as it's finecast, most of those details are fairly soft and I spent a lot of time going back over bits where a little edge of a new detail appeared after a wash or drybrush in the area and I realised there was a bit I had missed*.
I swapped the back banner and took the shield off to change the overall feel of the model and it was only while painting him that I noticed he now has two guns. . .
*I found a lot of little purity seals this way

The librarian is a much more simple job as I think all I did was a shoulder pad swap and a shield. Its only in hindsight that I wish I'd done slightly more on him to make him really fit into the army, but as its a generic space marine model that's trying to fit into the Grey Knight look.

Squad Matteo

When I was last painting up my August Lion space marines I had this bright idea of swapping the Terminator Librarian's force sword using the grey knight kit but I just could not find my spare sprues, a quick look on eBay later and I had a cheeky low bid on a new sprue of terminators, expecting to lose but not worried if I won.

Obviously, the quickest way to find something old is to replace it, so once the bid was placed I remembered where the sprues were but it was too late to do anything about the bid and I promptly won these ones as well. I dutifully built, sprayed and started painting them fairly quickly* and then moved onto other projects.

*no maturing for these sprues

Fast forward a bit and I'm sitting in my shed trying to decide what to paint and I spot the Grey Knights that I have been moving out the way constantly around my desk for weeks and its pretty clear they need to be finished and put away. I've painted them identically to the other two squads of terminators with the only difference that this squad has an apothecary who has a bit more white in their colour scheme.

The August Lion Patrol

In the effort to finish a project, any project, I spent a few days making sure the last of my August Lion combat patrol was finished. I only had the terminator squad and the terminator librarian picked up from the magazine to do. I painted these vaguely the same as the rest of the force, with the librarian being blue as much for that being their codex colour as well as copying the Lego wizard he is supposed to be based on.
The terminators should have white helmets to show they are veterans, however, I though the white would break the 50/50 split too much, so I decided to go with a black helmet to show their status, partly as it didn't add another colour and partly because the knight that came in this faction of Lego castle had a black helmet.

The Librarian was slightly converted to make him a big more interesting, the joy of doing a lot of Grey Knight terminators at the moment is I have a lot of terminator sized interesting pieces. He got a weapon swap as it's a big part of the silhouette and a top ornament change.

There is every risk I will add the Dark Angel combat patrol to this project in time, but I'm not going to do it right now.

The Lion

Considering how much Horus Heresy I played a few years back and how many figures I painted for that project, I have never painted up a Primarch, despite definitely needing one for a few of the games I have played. I've always kind of felt that the price tag for the resin ones required a better paint job than I could happily do, so I've never attempted it*.
However, with plastic Primarchs coming out for 40k, it was always just going to end up being when rather than if.
*plus they always feel like they should be displayed somewhere rather than stored in boxes and that's something I also don't have
The three chaos Primarchs so far didn't suit my chaos armies, so they were out**, then there were the loyalists. Guilliman being the regent of the Imperium, just didn't feel like someone who should be on the battlefield and character wise I just don't see him going anywhere without his chapter, which I don't have and don't plan to do. The Lion, though, is much more of a loner, and I can see him just joining any of his descendants to do a job***, so as I have a combat patrol of Dark Angel successors, I asked for one for Christmas as a project.
**the newly shown off 4th one also doesn't fit
***although I just can't seen the Dark Angels letting him out of their sight without a unit of bodyguards of their own which I do plan to buy and do at some point

Lion el'johnson primarch of the 1st dark angels

All in all I'm pretty pleased with the model. I've spent a bit more time on him than I would a normal model and I think it shows. It's also given me a bit more confidence doing these more expensive character models and now there are a bunch of new Phoenix Lords on preorder . . .

Nemesis Dreadknight Alessio

Another model that came in the combat patrol is the Nemesis Dreadknight - or Baby Carrier as it is sometimes known. This is quite a divisive model in the Warhammer's current range, just because as a concept it sounds so good - a massive exo-suit that Grey Knight Terminators put on when even a Terminator suit won't cut it - but in practise it looks like something a new parent buys.
In the novel Angron, a handful of Grey Knights go to banish the newly reborn daemon primarch and put on these suits to be able to do it, and it's one hell of a cool scene but model wise it can be hard to defend at times.

On the other hand, I am thinking that if this army does continue to grow I would like at least a pair of these to be able to go toe to toe with Greater Daemons. This one is worn by the last member of Squad Alessio.
